    Drink-drive blitz nets hundreds

A teenager who crashed his parents' car was among almost 200 people caught drink-driving in a festive crackdown.

The 18-year-old was stopped in the Grampian area after a crash and had no licence or insurance, as well as being over the limit said a police spokesman.

The man was was also reported for the unlawful removal of his parents' car and for failing to stop and report a collision.

Across Scotland, 186 drivers were caught drink-driving or refusing to give a breath test. The figures come as part of an ongoing festive crackdown

A total of six people were found to be unfit to drive due to drugs.

The stoppages were marginally down on the 209 reported for the campaign's first week last year.

Among the others caught this year was a 25-year-old man arrested following a car chase in Glasgow City centre.

He was eventually caught after a lengthy chase on foot and charged with drink-driving.

In Falkirk, a 50-year-old woman was found to be nearly five times over the limit.

In Wishaw, Lanarkshire, another 18-year-old man was stopped for drink-driving just five weeks after passing his test.

Tayside Police Chief Constable John Vine, the country's road policing chief, said: "Take the risk of getting behind the wheel after consuming excess alcohol or drugs and the chances are you will be caught.

"Although there were fewer drivers caught this year, it is still 199 too many."

"If you are going to drink during this festive season, don't drive - there is a host of alternatives in every community throughout Scotland for getting home without using the car."

Officers will continue to be vigilant into the New Year period.
