Speed Camera Notice Hoax

This Old Hoax NIP website appears to be alive and kicking once again after turning up in my Inbox this morning !

i-database.co.uk was first brought to my attention many years ago. It is the type of e-mail passed on from a friend, in an attempt to do you a favour, which results in a large dose of unnecessary stress! The website states a “free of charge check will be undertaken of the registration to ascertain whether any speed offences have been committed by the vehicle within the last 28 days” – a Speed Camera Check. It is human nature to be inquisitive about this sort of thing: a “heads up” for even bad information is usually enough to prick a persons curiosity. However i am happy to state now that this is a HOAX: if you were to try your own registration plate then the website will happily generate a speeding ticket for you in a part of the country which you may never of visited before. Put in your postcode and the website will tell you that your own HOUSE was speeding on the A93 from Perth to Aberdeen 10 days ago.

I was happy to inform the friend of mine who forwarded this e-mail onto me that such a Speed Camera Check was a hoax, and for a number of reasons this type of Speed Camera Check website would not be plausible! If a website such as this was proposed it would breach a number of very basic privacy laws and data protection, as well as completely bypass the administrative system in place for NIP.

If you have been flashed by a speed camera, the Police have a 14 day window of opportunity to issue the ‘registered keeper’ with a NIP for the alleged offence. You are REQUIRED to provide information to identify the driver. However please note that if you were driving a company car or a leased vehicle remember that the 14 day time limit will not apply to you. In the majority of cases, once the driver of the vehicle has been identified, you will receive a conditional offer of 3 penalty points and a £100. Along with being stopped by a police officer these are the Only Two ways that you can be issued with a NIP – a Speed Camera Check does not exist!

If you have received a NIP and believe that the registered speed you are accused of is particularly high, or you do not believe that you were speeding at all then a number of defences may be open to you. For a FREE CASE CONSULTATION go to www.roadtrafficlaw.com now or CALL 0800 048 8696
