How To Re Apply For A Driving Licence After A Drink Drive Ban
If you have been disqualified from driving due to a drink drive ban, you will need to apply for a new licence when you want to start driving again. It should be noted that there are different procedures in place for the re-application process depending on your classification at the time of losing your licence. If you have been classed as a high risk offender, you will need to take additional steps to re-obtain your licence. The following conditions will determine if you are classed as a high risk offender:
- You had an alcohol level of more than 200 milligrams (mg) in 100 millilitres (ml) of blood, or 87.5mg in 100ml of breath, or 267.5mg in 100ml of urine
- You have been two listings of being over the legal limit in a 10 year period
- You have been unable to drive because of drink twice in a 10 year period
- You failed to supply, blood, breath or urine for testing
These are the main criteria for being classed as high-risk and any other offence while driving is classes as non-high risk.
It is your responsibility to update your information
If you have been classed as an offender that is not a high risk offender, you will find that the DVLA provides you with a D27 form. This will usually be sent to you 56 days prior to the disqualification period ending. It is your responsibility to complete this form and then send it to the DVLA. You could be required to take a new passport photo and send this along with your application. It is also your responsibility to ensure that you have provided the DVLA with your correct details and information. A failure to do so may see you facing punishment at a later date. If you have been classed as a high risk offender, you should find that the DVLA will provide you with an application form 90 days prior to the end of your disqualification period. If this form does not arrive in the post you will be required to obtain it from the online ordering service provided by the DVLA. Again, it is important to ensure that all of the information you include on this application is up to date, even if circumstances have changed since you previously held your licence. A failure to do so will see you potentially face greater punishment if found to be driving with a licence that contains incorrect information.
Additional forms need to be completed for additional driving licences
If you are looking to re-apply for a coach, bus or lorry licence, there is a need to complete the D2 form, which is separate from the standard driving licence. This form can be obtained from the DVLA. Prior to obtaining your licence, there is a requirement for you to undertake a medical examination with a doctor who has been approved by the DVLA. The examination will cover a number of issues. You should expect to fill in a questionnaire which covers your alcohol use and your general medical history. You will also undergo a physical examination and take blood tests. There will be a charge for this medical examination and you will be expected to pay for your own medical examination. The results from this medical examination will determine your suitability to obtain your driving licence one again.
When motorists re apply for a driving licence after a drink drive ban it is not uncommon for the DVLA to delay or deny a person making a request to re-obtain their driving licence based on the findings of the medical examination. If you pass the medical examination, your new driving licence should be issues to you in as short a time as possible.
